General information

Brahma Kumaris is a worldwide spiritual movement dedicated to personal transformation and world renewal. Founded in India in 1937, Brahma  Kumaris has spread to over 110 countries on all continents and has had an extensive impact in many sectors as an international NGO. However, their real commitment is to helping individuals transform their perspective of the world from material to spiritual. It supports the cultivation of a deep collective consciousness of peace and of the individual dignity of each soul.

International coordination

The spiritual headquarters of Brahma Kumaris is in Mount Abu, India. At a national level, activities are generally coordinated by local people in alignment with the spiritual principles of Brahma Kumaris, working in accordance with the laws of the land. Activities of international interest are coordinated regionally from offices in London, Moscow, Nairobi, New York and Sydney.

The role of women as spiritual leaders

Brahma Kumaris is the largest spiritual organisation in the world led by women. It was the founder, Prajapita Brahma Baba, who chose to put women in front from the very beginning, and it has set Brahma Kumaris apart on the stage of the world’s religions and spiritual organisations. For over 80 years their leadership has been characterised by steady courage, a capacity for forgiveness and a deep commitment to unity.

Although women hold the top administrative positions, the women who hold these positions have always made decisions in partnership with the men. It is a partnership and consensus model of leadership, based on respect, equality and humility. As such, it stands as an exemplar of accomplished and harmonious jurisdiction.

The Retreat Centre

Since 1993, the Global Retreat Centre at Nuneham House (administered by the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University UK) has welcomed thousands of people from across the world. They come to restore balance and focus to their life through solitude, silence and the study of spiritual values. Tucked away in the rolling countryside of Oxfordshire just outside of Oxford, surrounded by 55 acres of historical gardens and overlooking the river Thames, Nuneham Park is the perfect location to step away from the frantic pace of modern living, and to rediscover your inner peace and power.

What We Offer

Our events range from residential retreats to talks and courses, for grass roots workers in the community to dialogues for leading thinkers on international and environmental issues. All aim to provide insights and experiences into the basics of meditation and the application of values. Whatever your reason for visiting, you will find a warm welcome, a calming and unpretentious atmosphere, and sensitive and experienced speakers.

Our Ethos

Here at the Retreat Centre, we work as a team, meditate together and give our time freely to create an all-year-round programme of events. We aim to nurture the very best in ourselves so that we can naturally enjoy sharing something of value with others. Whether your stay with us is a couple of hours or a weekend, we aim to make it easier to connect to a place of tranquillity within and see life from a higher perspective.

The Benefits

We understand how much the stresses and strains of life can take their toll. That’s why we think it’s important that your experience here should feel both calming for the mind and nourishing for the body. Our guests tell us that the uplifting spiritual atmosphere of the house and grounds can be clearly felt. Learning to enter into a natural state of calm enhances our ability to think more deeply, feel greater empathy and live out our values in more authentic ways. Daily calm, clear thinking and values- based living can all positively impact our relationships and well-being. The combination of openly shared wisdom, an environment for reflection and natural lightness of being helps thousands each year find breakthroughs in thinking so that they can move forward in their lives and professions.

The Location

The Retreat Centre is a 17th century Palladian villa etched with the influence of poets, philosophers and visiting royalty and set in magnificent, historical grounds overlooking the gently undulating Oxfordshire landscape. Whether inside the Centre or outside, your visit will offer you a stunningly rich personal experience.

Regional Coordinator – Sr Vedanti

Sister Vedanti, a woman of vision, resilience, courage and determination – balanced with a humble and loving nature, is the Regional Director of the Brahma Kumaris in Africa. She was born in India and after graduating from Gujarat University with a Bachelors Degree in Philosophy and Psychology, she dedicated her life to the teachings and work of the Brahma Kumaris. Although based in India, she held the vision that these spiritual teachings are valuable for people of all cultures and traditions. She felt deeply, that the foundation of spirituality is what unifies, all differences can be overcome and people can live more fulfilled lives. In 1974 she accepted the challenge to come to Africa, to establish centres of meditation and spiritual learning.

Regional Coordinating Office – Nairobi, Kenya

Established in 1978, all major projects and initiatives are co-ordinated from Nairobi for Africa.Today it serves as both a co-ordinating office as well as a retreat centre. The Serve Africa Retreat Centre regularly hosts retreats and programs to serve both the local communities of Nairobi as well as internationally. Annually one of the most important roles it plays is to offer ongoing training and sustenance for the teachers and students of Africa.

Serve Africa Project

We are all part of one family. It does not matter from what part of Africa or the world we come from, we are connected through our values. We desire the same peace, love, respect and happiness as our neighbour. When we strip away our roles and outward differences, we discover that we are indeed all the same, beautiful and amazing shining lights brothers and sisters. In African culture Ubuntu speaks of our interconnectedness and the responsibility to each other that flows from this connection. As an African and a global citizen our task is simply to unveil our own inner beauty and see it reflected in another person.

It is in this spirit that the Serve Africa project was conceived. In 2004 the Brahma Kumaris in Africa made a bold commitment to grow their activities beyond 16 countries in Africa, to giving more people the opportunity of learning meditation and engaging in a spiritual study for personal transformation. From 2004 to 2006 students and teachers from Africa and around the world worked together in a grand outreach project, resulting in that we now have 78 centres dotted across the continent. The project resulted in the empowerment of so many, both teachers, volunteers and individuals from many cultures and walks of life finding new meaningful ways of integrating spiritual values and meditation in their lives to enhance their wellbeing and service to humanity.

Commitment, Enthusiasm, Action Dedication, Creativity, Cooperation, Courage, Determination and Love were some of the ingredients which made this project such a success. The glowing faces when sharing their adventures, the stories of personal transformation and the depth of experience of spiritual connection with the Divine are a testament of its success
